Heat Pump vs Furnace: What Midwest Homeowners Should Know

Heat pumps are efficient. Iowa winters are cold. For Davenport homeowners replacing an aging system, those two facts seem to be in direct conflict, and that tension is exactly what sends people down a research spiral that ends with more confusion than when they started. We’ve been installing and servicing heating systems across the Quad Cities since 1973, and the honest answer is that both systems can work here. The better question is which one works best for your specific home.

What follows isn’t a generic buyer’s guide. It’s a breakdown built around what Davenport winters actually look like, what fuel source you’re probably already using, and what the incentive landscape looks like in 2026. One very common misconception about the federal tax credit could cost you if you’re not prepared for it.

How Each System Actually Works

A gas furnace burns fuel to generate heat, then a blower pushes that heated air through your ductwork and into each room. Most homes across the Quad Cities run on natural gas, and high-efficiency furnace models today reach AFUE ratings of 96 to 98 percent. AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) measures how much of the fuel burned actually becomes usable heat, so a 96% AFUE furnace wastes only about 4 cents of every dollar spent on gas.

A heat pump works differently. Instead of creating heat, it moves heat that already exists in outdoor air and transfers it inside. In summer, the process reverses and it functions as an air conditioner. Because the system moves heat rather than generates it, a heat pump can deliver two to three units of heating energy for every unit of electricity it consumes. That ratio is called the coefficient of performance (COP), and it’s why heat pumps can outperform even high-efficiency furnaces under the right conditions. Heat pumps are rated by HSPF2 for heating efficiency, a scale that measures seasonal performance rather than fuel burn. Comparing AFUE to HSPF2 directly is a common mistake that leads homeowners to draw the wrong conclusions from spec sheets.

What Davenport’s Climate Actually Demands

Davenport sits in ASHRAE Climate Zone 5A, the same classification as Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City. January average lows run around 15 to 16°F, and temperatures rarely dip below -4°F. That’s genuinely cold, but it’s not the sustained sub-zero stretches that define northern Minnesota winters. That distinction matters more than most homeowners realize.

Modern cold-climate heat pumps (sometimes labeled ccASHP) use inverter-driven compressors, which continuously adjust their output rather than cycling on and off at full power. These systems maintain effective heating performance down to -13°F or colder, which covers the vast majority of Davenport winter days. An older heat pump from a decade ago might have struggled here. Current cold-climate models are a different product.

There’s also the summer side of the equation. The Quad Cities sees hot, humid summers with highs regularly in the upper 80s, and any system you install today needs to handle both extremes. A heat pump handles heating and cooling in a single unit, which simplifies the equipment side and can reduce the total installation footprint compared to running separate systems.

Your Fuel Source Often Decides the Question

Climate zone sets the context, but your existing fuel source often determines the right answer faster than any other variable.

Natural Gas Homes
Natural gas service is well-established across the Quad Cities, and for homes already connected to the gas line, a high-efficiency gas furnace frequently offers lower operating costs than a standalone heat pump at current Iowa utility rates. Natural gas is typically cheaper per BTU than electricity in Iowa, though the gap varies. Before assuming either system wins on cost, pull your actual rate per therm and per kilowatt-hour from your MidAmerican Energy bill and run the comparison with real numbers.

Propane or Electric Resistance Homes
Homes heated by propane or electric resistance baseboards are strong candidates for a heat pump or a dual-fuel setup. Propane costs considerably more per BTU than natural gas, and electric resistance heat converts electricity to heat at a 1:1 ratio. A cold-climate heat pump delivering a COP of 2.5 does the same heating work at 40% of the energy consumption. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, homes switching from electric resistance to a heat pump can reduce electricity used for heating by up to 75 percent.

The Dual-Fuel Option: Often the Right Answer for Zone 5A

A dual-fuel system (sometimes called a hybrid heating system) pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace in a single setup. The heat pump runs as the primary heating source through mild fall and spring days and through most winter days above roughly 30 to 35°F. When temperatures fall into the single digits, the system automatically switches to the gas furnace. The homeowner doesn’t manage the switchover; the thermostat does.

For Davenport homeowners who already have a natural gas line, this configuration captures heat pump efficiency during the majority of heating hours while preserving furnace reliability for the coldest stretches. If the existing home has a functional furnace that doesn’t need immediate replacement, dual-fuel is often the most logical starting point.

Home tightness also matters here. A well-insulated, newer-construction home can often handle an all-electric cold-climate heat pump without any backup, because envelope losses are low enough that the heat pump keeps pace even in hard cold. Older or draftier homes typically get a better balance of efficiency and reliability from dual-fuel, because the furnace backstop reduces the risk of undersizing the heat pump for peak load.

A Manual J load calculation (the industry-standard method for sizing heating and cooling equipment to the actual volume, insulation level, and window area of a specific home) can tell you which configuration fits before any equipment gets ordered. Skipping that step and guessing on sizing is one of the most common sources of comfort complaints after a new installation.

Comfort, Cost & Incentives: What to Know Before Deciding

How each system feels to live with is something no spec sheet explains. A gas furnace delivers short bursts of high-temperature air that warm a room quickly and noticeably. A heat pump circulates air at lower discharge temperatures in longer, steadier cycles. Some homeowners notice the air from a heat pump doesn’t feel as intensely warm at the vent, even though indoor temperatures hold consistently. Heat pumps also preserve more indoor humidity than gas furnaces, which can dry out the air in a well-sealed home during a cold Iowa winter. Neither approach is objectively better, but knowing the difference helps set realistic expectations before you commit.

The Incentive Landscape in 2026

One detail that catches many homeowners off guard: the federal Section 25C energy efficiency tax credit, which offered 30% of equipment cost up to $2,000 for qualifying heat pump installations, expired December 31, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed July 4, 2025. Installations completed in 2026 don’t qualify. Several competitor sites and national buyer’s guides still cite this credit as available, so confirm directly before factoring it into a project budget.

Two programs remain worth tracking. MidAmerican Energy’s Instant Discounts program provides point-of-sale savings on qualifying high-efficiency HVAC equipment, including heat pumps, for eligible Iowa residential customers. The discount applies at the time of purchase through participating contractors, so there’s no rebate paperwork to file after the fact. For income-qualified households at or below 150% of the area median income, federal HEAR rebates can cover up to $8,000 for qualifying heat pump installations. Iowa’s HEAR program is administered through the Iowa Economic Development Authority, but as of mid-2026 it hasn’t launched in Iowa and timing remains uncertain. Confirm current availability before factoring it into your budget. Rebates aren’t projected to be retroactive once the program opens.

Making the Right Call for Your Home

There isn’t a single right answer that applies to every home in Davenport. A natural gas home with good insulation and a furnace still in reasonable shape might be best served by adding a heat pump to the existing system. A propane-heated home with ductwork in decent condition is probably looking at a heat pump as the more economical long-term path. An older drafty home might benefit most from dual-fuel. Fuel source, insulation quality, existing equipment condition, and actual utility rates all feed into an honest recommendation.
